Poipu must be the most pleasant place in Kauai, on the most beautiful island of Hawaii. And one of the greatest benefits of staying at the Makahuena, and in particular, this unit, is that you are right in the center of where all of the activity takes place. On the ocean, on the beach, right at the center of everything. Of course, it’s hard to leave Makahuena and venture out since it’s so pleasant just to stay here, and be on the water. However, there is much to be explored in Kauai.
Kauai was named the number one island in Hawaii by readers of Travel+Leisure magazine in the publication's 2006 World's Best Awards. The beauty of the garden island is overwhelming. One of our favorite things to do is just to sit on the lanai, and walk along the beach. Actually, we can’t think of anything we like better. But for those of you that are more adventurous, here is a brief narrative of some of the many adventures which await you.
One of our other favorites is to walk over to the spa at the Grand Hyatt, Kauai. It’s a very pleasant, ten minute walk down the beach. The spa offers all sorts of treatments, one of my personal favorites being the “four hands massage” which means that you have two massage therapists give a coordinated massage. It’s the closest thing I know of to levitating to another world of relaxation. This is probably the single best spa we have seen, next to the Maui Hyatt, which is probably the best we have found in the world.
Surfing
In addition to great beaches and world class surfing & snorkeling, Poipu also has some of the best beaches in the world. Included is Brennecke's Beach, world famous for body surfing, which is just a short walk from Makahuena. Next to Brennecke's is Poipu Beach Park, with the best snorkeling and swimming. Of course, Baby Beach is a great place to take the little ones, and it has its own playground for the kids to play on.
There are many local boat operators that would be pleased for you to charter their boat for whale watching or scuba diving, and sunset cruises. Or you could rent a kayak and take it out yourself. There are also two botanical gardens that have rare, exotic and beautiful Pacific flowers. Consider Allerton Gardens, with guided tours offered daily. The lush gardens of Kiahuna Plantation are also free. Local horse back riding is only 5 minute’s drive. There are lots of places to shop in Kauai. The Poipu Shopping Center is local, or there is more shopping in Koloa.

The two most popular golf courses on Kauai are the Kiahuna Golf Course and the Poipu Bay (home of the PGA Grand Slam. It’s easy to get a tee time in Poipu. A helicopter tour is available from many experienced operators on Kauai. You can tour the island and see all of its breathtaking wonders, or consider at least, flying over to the shore of Makahuena and take a picture of your favorite vacation condo! Perhaps you could have your friends or family on the lanai waving back at you. What a vacation picture!
Whether dining, tennis, golf, horseback riding, snorkeling, scuba diving, boating, shopping, or helicopters, Poipu has much to do, and you are limited only by the time and energy you have to spend.
